The head coach of Sporting CP, Rui Borges, clarified after the clash against FC Porto why Pedro Gonçalves did not start the match. The decision surprised some supporters, given the attacking midfielder’s importance to Sporting’s offensive play.
According to Rui Borges, the choice was mainly tactical. The coach explained that the game plan for facing FC Porto required different characteristics at the beginning of the match, prioritizing defensive balance and intensity in midfield duels. “We needed a more compact team, prepared to deal with the opponent’s high press. Pedro is fundamental for us, but we felt he could be more decisive later in the game,” he said.
The manager also noted that physical management played a role in the decision. After a demanding run of fixtures, the coaching staff opted to manage the workload of key players, including Pedro Gonçalves, ensuring greater freshness if introduced in the second half.
When asked about the impact of leaving the player out of the starting lineup, Rui Borges downplayed any controversy and emphasized trust in the squad: “We have a competitive group. Whoever comes in gives a positive response. What matters is the team, not individual players.”
Pedro Gonçalves was eventually introduced in the second half, aiming to influence the outcome in a tightly contested and intense classic encounter.
The decision highlights the strategic approach adopted for high-profile matches, underlining how every detail can make a difference at this level.
